American Artist magazine

I've always been very inspired by watching other artists’ works. That's why I love so much to go to museums, I always feel like painting afterwards. I also use the internet for this. I find a lot of ideas and inspiration by surfing on art web pages.

One day when I was in Stockmann, I was looking for some magazines and tumbled over the art magazine section. They have a lot of English magazines there, as well as some Finnish. I especially laid my eyes on one magazine called American Artist. Not so much because it was American or written in English, but because of the beautiful realistic paintings that covered the front page. I bought it, and discovered a fantastic world of inspiration. For me, who loves realistic art, this was a valuable find. I wanted to share it with you, so that you can also discover the magazine.

Of course, as it says in the name; American Artist is an American magazine. It has many interesting articles about American artists (both living and dead) and also sometimes some foreign ones. This June 2008 issue for example, has an article called “The First Realist: The Paintings of Gustave Courbet”.

They also have a very interesting article about portrait painting called “Unlocking a Subject's Personality”. It's mainly an article about the portrait painter Garth Herrick.
Scott Prior is another artist that's being written about here, in an article called “A Contemporary Approach to California Impressionism”.
All of these artists and many more have some of their work on the website of American Artist:

www.myAmericanArtist.com

It is really a website worth taking a look at!
It has many interesting forums where you can discuss art, as well as big articles where professional artists might help you with your work. There’s information about workshops (of course mainly in the USA) and competitions.
I urge you all to check out the web page for yourself, and if you don’t have the chance, pick up the magazine in Stockmann.

American Artist also gives out four other magazines under the main one called: Watercolor, Drawing, Workshop and Drawing Highlights.

And while you’re buying this magazine, make sure you take a look at all the other art magazines that are there, also Finnish ones!
